Begum Rokeya: A Pioneer of Women’s Education and Freedom

History does not change only through battles, political movements or the rise and fall of empires. It also changes when someone challenges an accepted injustice and creates opportunities for others. Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain was one such figure. A Bengali writer, educator and social reformer, she questioned the restrictions that prevented women from learning and participating fully in society. Her work brought together imagination and practical effort. She wrote about a different future, established a school and encouraged women to recognise their own abilities. Her story shows how education can become a foundation for wider social change.

Childhood and the Desire to Learn

Born in Pairaband, Rangpur, in 1880, Rokeya grew up in a household where learning was valued, but educational opportunities differed sharply between boys and girls. While her brothers received formal education, she learned at home with support from her siblings. This difference helped shape her understanding of inequality. A girl who had never been allowed to study could easily be judged as incapable, even though her abilities had never been given a chance to develop. Rokeya’s later work repeatedly challenged that assumption. Her own pursuit of knowledge became the starting point for a broader concern with women’s access to education.

Marriage and the Growth of a Writer

Rokeya married Syed Sakhawat Hossain in 1898. His encouragement supported her reading and literary work, allowing her to develop interests that had begun during childhood. Yet encouragement alone did not produce her achievements. She brought determination, intellectual curiosity and an ability to examine everyday customs critically. Writing offered her a way to reach people beyond her immediate surroundings. Through essays and fiction, she explored how social expectations shaped women’s lives. She encouraged readers to consider whether practices defended as tradition were fair, useful or necessary, especially when those practices denied women the chance to learn.

Sultana’s Dream and an Alternative World

Published in English in 1905, Sultana’s Dream uses an imaginary country to question real inequalities. In Ladyland, women lead public life and use scientific knowledge to improve society, while men remain secluded. This reversal makes familiar restrictions appear strange. Readers are invited to examine arrangements they might otherwise accept without reflection. The story also connects women’s education with scientific creativity and social progress. Its imaginative setting allows Rokeya to explore serious questions through conversation, humour and surprise. Rather than simply describing the difficulties women faced, she presents a world in which their abilities have room to flourish.

Making Education a Practical Reality

Rokeya’s educational work gave practical form to her ideas. After her husband’s death, she opened the Sakhawat Memorial Girls’ School in Bhagalpur in 1909 with five pupils. She later re-established it in Calcutta in 1911. Founding a school involved much more than providing lessons. It required persuading families that their daughters should attend and building confidence in an unfamiliar opportunity. Progress depended on patient work with parents as well as students. The school created a place where girls could develop knowledge and confidence, turning an argument for women’s education into an institution that served them directly.

Persistence in the Face of Resistance

Her approach to reform required patience as well as conviction. Families worried about seclusion, travel and the social consequences of sending girls to school. Rokeya worked to address these concerns while continuing to expand access to learning. This reveals an important feature of her leadership: she understood that lasting change often depends on practical arrangements and relationships of trust. A convincing argument could open a conversation, but regular attendance required workable solutions. Her achievement therefore included the less visible labour of organising, explaining and persevering when acceptance came slowly.

Collective Action and Independence

In 1916, Rokeya founded Anjuman-e-Khawatin-e-Islam, an organisation that supported women through educational assistance and other forms of help. Its activities reflected an understanding that disadvantage rarely has a single cause. Education matters, but poverty and dependence can prevent women from using what they learn. Collective support could help address those barriers. Rokeya’s work therefore reached beyond individual achievement toward shared opportunity. By connecting education with assistance and economic independence, she recognised that women needed both knowledge and conditions that allowed them to act on it.

A Legacy Beyond Her Lifetime

Rokeya died in Calcutta on 9 December 1932. Bangladesh commemorates that date as Rokeya Day. Her historical importance rests on the connection she built between ideas and action. Literature helped her challenge assumptions; education allowed her to create opportunities; organisation extended support to women facing hardship. Remembering her also means continuing to examine who receives opportunities and who remains excluded. Her life demonstrates the value of sustained effort: a story can change how people think, a school can change what children expect from life, and both can help a society imagine a more equal future.
